Here’s a question most business owners have never actually sat down to answer:

What do you stand for?

Not your mission statement. Not your tagline. Not the words on your About page that someone else might have written.

What do YOU actually stand for — in your business, in your work, in how you treat the people who hire you?

That answer is your values. And they are not decorative.

WHAT BUSINESS VALUES ACTUALLY ARE

Business values are not a list of adjectives you hang on a wall. They’re not “integrity, excellence, innovation” copy-pasted from a corporate branding guide.

Your real values are the things you will not compromise — even when it would be easier, more profitable, or more popular to do so.

They show up in the decisions that cost you something.

  • Do you turn down a client who isn’t a good fit, even when you need the revenue? That’s a value.
  • Do you price your work in a way that reflects what it’s actually worth, even when you’re afraid no one will pay it? That’s a value.
  • Do you build your business around your life — your health, your family, your rhythms — instead of the other way around? That’s a value.

Values are not aspirational. They’re operational. They’re the filter through which every significant business decision runs.

HOW TO IDENTIFY YOURS

Most people approach this backwards. They sit down with a list of “value words” and pick the ones that sound good. But that produces a values statement, not actual values.

Here’s a better approach:

  • Look at the decisions you’ve already made.
  • Think about a time you said no to something in your business — a client, an opportunity, a strategy — even though part of you wanted to say yes. What made you say no? What were you protecting?
  • Think about a time you said yes to something that didn’t serve you financially but felt right. What was driving that?
  • Think about what makes you genuinely angry when you see it in the business world. What’s the opposite of that? That’s probably a value.

Your values are already operating in your business. This process is about naming them — so you can use them intentionally instead of just feeling them vaguely.

THE FOUR QUESTIONS

Here are four questions worth sitting with this week:

  1. What am I unwilling to compromise in how I do business — regardless of what it costs me?
  2. What do I want the people I work with to say about the experience of working with me?
  3. What does success look like to me that has nothing to do with money?
  4. If my business fully reflected my values, what would be different about it from what it is today?

Write the answers. Don’t edit them. The raw answer is the real one.

WHY THIS IS SOUTH COMPASS WORK

In the Business Growth Compass framework, values sit at the North point — they’re the foundation of vision and leadership. But they also run straight through the South point: Operations and Systems.

Because here’s what happens when your values aren’t clear:

  • You build systems that don’t serve you.
  • You create policies that conflict with how you actually want to show up.
  • You price inconsistently because you haven’t decided what your work is worth relative to what you value.
  • You make reactive decisions instead of principled ones.

When your values are clear, your operations get simpler. You know what to say yes to and what to say no to. You know what to charge and why. You know how to design your client experience because you know what you’re committed to delivering.

Values don’t make business easier. They make your decisions clearer. And clear decisions build stronger businesses.

YOUR ACTION THIS WEEK

Pick one value — the one that feels most alive for you right now. The one you’re most committed to and most likely to compromise under pressure.

Write it down.

Then look at your business this week through that lens. Where is that value showing up? Where is it absent? What’s one thing you could change this week to bring more of it into how you operate?

That’s the work.
