Holiday Leadership Lessons: It's a Wonderful Life…

Special Leadership Lessons from Holiday Movies:

It’s a Wonderful Life:
Never Underestimate the Power of Tribes

One of the most memorable Christmas movies of all time is Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring the incomparable Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. It’s the ultimate feel-good movie, perfect for anyone who’s ever wondered if their life holds meaning.

Here’s the lowdown: George Bailey, played by Stewart, is on the verge of collapse. His small building and loan company is on the verge of bankruptcy, the mean rich man in town is poised to swoop in, and though he has a house full of adorable kids and a gorgeous wife (Reed), there’s never enough money to go around. George decides his family and business would be better off without him. On the brink of suicide, he’s saved by a fledgling angel, Clarence.

Clarence goes on to show George what his life would be like if he’d never existed, and the sight ain’t pretty. By seeing all the people he’s touched, George realizes that he has created a strong network of love and support – he’s created a tribe. And it’s this tribe that pulls together at the end of the movie to give back to George, helping him out of his current difficulties.

The lesson to you should be obvious: Your tribe can, quite literally, save your life. You should be building not only a viable business, but a community – one that supports and cares for each other. If you’re just out to make a buck, don’t be surprised if no one leaps to defend you or lend you a helping hand when things go bad. And they will go bad.

You can get “slapped” by Google. You can get your PayPal account frozen. You can get brought up on charges by the FTC. You can get hacked, robbed, or plagiarized. It happens.

But if you have friends like George’s, you’ll have a whole team of folks on your side. But one thing to remember: George had friends he’d created just by being a good guy, doing the right thing at the right time, not worrying about what was in it for him. He stood up for what was right and shook hand after hand, even when it cost him personally.

He didn’t build this community by selling junk or automating his Twitter feed or spamming everyone. He did it the old fashioned way: By caring.

Some business techniques never go out of style.

How have you incorporated building community into your leadership style and practice?  Building community is skill of talented leaders.

Business Owner Commitment and Determination Create a Solid Foundation For Success

Commitment | Perseverance | Risk | Courage

As a business owner, your commitment to the business and your determination to succeed build your solid foundation for success. But there are challenging times when you might need an extra dose of determination and commitment, as your personal supply dwindles..

There are hundreds of stories that model this type of determination and success. The “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book series was submitted to many, many publishers that turned it down. Each of those publishers later kicked themselves, I’m sure. But it was the determination of the authors that kept them sending it out one more time. Or the actor, accidentally discovered while waiting tables or by a fluke ended up at a talent search.

Determination, commitment and belief are often at the core of these stories. It is the passion and belief in your own abilities that moves you into continuous action, and then determination keeps you there.

Your positive attitude exceeds just a “we can do this” type of attitude. But rather it takes your belief and passion, or your love of what you do that helps you to see it through to the end, your success. For many that means taking that leap to move into the realm of success and turn your business into one that thrives, using all of the resources at hand to get you there.

The technology of the Internet adds massive resources for all business owners. The Internet is a resource for networking with your target market, building your expertise and market your services or products. Using the Internet can be a low cost option if done correctly. You can use the Internet as your market place or as an additional market place for your business. It gives you the ability to quickly do research on your business, your market and how to access them.

It is all there and it is easily accessible.

Despite What You Might Want, Marketing IS a Requirement

With business, it is rarely, “If you build it, they will come”. Usually, they only come to your business when you market the business and tell people about it. You have to build a reputation and rapport with your clients and prospects in order to build your business. Marketing is a requirement, and a passion for marketing will help. If you hate marketing, then you will struggle with effective marketing. If you can find a way to become passionate about marketing, just like you are for your business you will do better. Whether you are an online business or an offline business, you HAVE to market.

The Internet offers many marketing resources, but there is also a learning curve that for some will be mountainous. But it is worth the effort in the payoff.

Personal Development Keeps You On The Cutting Edge

Your positive attitude most likely also gives you a passion for learning. In the world of business it is important to be open to new technology, new ideas and new strategies. By remaining open to learning about each of these you stay on the cutting edge of business. Increasing your knowledge gives you advantages over competitors. Your knowledge makes you valuable to the business, but also to your colleagues, clients and prospects. People will seek you out.

When you learn new skills and tasks it gives you more information for outsourcing each of these eventually and the ability to be effective in working with specialists. It also enhances your confidence.

Profitable businesses take time. Staying the course through this development timeline is the challenge. As a business owner you can become weary. But when you have a foundation of your passion and positive attitude you are stronger in the business environment. With determination you can see your business succeed.

Keeping a focus on your business vision gives you energy for continuing to do the work each day to build that success. With a clear and compelling vision that you are tied to makes you even more determined.

Business Owner Commitment and Determination Create a Solid Foundation For Success

Magic of Mistakes

The Magic of Mistakes

Humans will always make mistakes. The keys to overcoming your mistakes are to:

• Learn the mistakes.
• Know what you did incorrectly.
• Accept that you made a mistake.
• Use the mistake to better yourself and your business.

Not until you are willing to embrace those things, will you be ready to find out the hidden treasures that can be found when mistakes are made.

As a business owner, you know all about mistakes. You made little ones as you got started. For some, too many mistakes and they find that the business life is not for them. And, maybe it isn’t.

Being in business for yourself requires a thick skin. You will have customers that are impossible to please, competition that seems to outdo you at every turn and unsuccessful marketing strategies. But, you live and learn. You will only be able to continue building your business if you have the right attitude – a positive one.

Turn your mistakes into big money.

It is human nature not to want to feel isolated. That extends to the business world. A business owner, who is brave enough to point out the mistakes they have made and how they learned from them, will have a following among other entrepreneurs. You can take that on the lecture circuit and gain a wide audience.

Networking is a part of doing business.

Your connections can be helpful when sales are slow or when you are looking to put together a new business venture. Targeting budding businesses with your brand of sage advice is one way to turn a negative into a positive.

What about customers? Maybe you hired someone who wasn’t the best at customer service. Every business owner knows that poor customer service can break a business. Instead of sitting back and brooding about your misfortune, take action.

Use this opportunity to revamp your customer service policy. That employee may be better in another area of your business. This may be the time to automate your customer service with autoresponder messages, a FAQ section on your website or an answering service.

Challenges force you to take a look at your business. Is there a way to improve an existing process? Of course there is. Use a mistake such as sending the wrong product or a failed online checkout process to make changes that will increase sales in the future.

What sets you apart?

You are willing to learn from mistakes (by using suggestions like those above) to continue to move forward in your business pursuits instead of leaning on them like crutches. Excuses rarely accomplish anything good. Mistakes can sour your mood. Shake it off and find out what you can learn from them to make your business a success.

Shine Light You

Shine the Light on You

As a business owner, you know the focus is on the customer. They are the ones that make your business into a success. In order to give more to your customers and your employees, you might have to hog the spotlight for a little while.

Business has its ups and downs. Everyone is happy when things are going well, but not so enthusiastic when things are going the other way. That is the time when your positive attitude needs to really kick in. Believe in your business again. It may have been a long time since you’ve asked yourself what makes you and your business tick. Do you still stand by your product and/or service? Of course you do.

Go Back to School

Even business owners need to add new skillsets. This is especially true if you conduct business on the Internet. There are so many new ways to market your product you may think you need to take a class to be sure you have learned all that you need to know.

So, let’s go back to school. Take some time out of your schedule to take an online tutorial or classes at the community college. Those with the expertise are offering their skills to you. Learn website design, website building, HTML, podcasting, link building, content writing, social networking and a host of other skills to enhance your business and your confidence.

As an added bonus, learning more skills also increases your confidence. You will feel more comfortable as a business owner. Interacting with other professional business people in person at conferences or online won’t be as daunting. You’ll be able to speak intelligently about a number of subjects much to your success.

Make Your Presence Known

Entrepreneurs hold business conferences all across the country. You can find out about them at online in forums, on websites or in the local newspaper. Attend one or two and find out what others are doing in the business world. It is a perfect excuse to place a business card in every hand that you shake.

Enjoy yourself. Ask questions and take notes. At work, you are the boss but here, you can play the avid pupil. Registering for a conference can be costly, but it is a worthwhile investment if you find the right one.

It’s okay to take top priority sometimes if it is for the sake of your business. Expanding your horizons in different ways can be a big boost to your bottom line and your self esteem. Enroll in a class, find a conference, or teach yourself a new skill that will benefit both you and your business today.

Determination Solid Foundation

Determination and a Solid Foundation

Your business may be new or several years old. If sales are not so good, what you need now is an infusion of determination. It is the solid foundation of many successful businesses.

We’ve all heard the stories before. Best-selling authors self-published their first novel and sold it out of their cars until they were discovered. Penniless movie stars who were discovered waiting tables or who spent their last dime on a bus ticket to Hollywood for a chance at fame.

The one common thread in these scenarios is determination. Willpower is more of an attitude than an act. It is the feeling that spurs you on to actions that lead to business victory.

This attitude is more than just a “can do” type of approach. Determination encompasses a love of the task at hand and the will to see it through to the end – period. In business situations, that means, turning your fledgling business into a successful enterprise using whatever methods (only honest methods, mind you) that will get you there.

With all of the new technology these days, the Internet is one of the premier places to advertise and begin a new business. The startup costs are low and there are no employees to pay, at least in the beginning. You don’t have to spend hours at the library or on the telephone doing research on your business idea. The information you need can be accessed quickly via the World Wide Web.

Marketing is a Must

Even for a profitable and slightly tapped area of business, people won’t come running to you. Marketing is everything for a business online or offline. Marketing strategies have gone high-tech on the Internet. It presents an often steep learning curve to young business owners to make their way in the online business world.

Always Keep Learning

A positive attitude views learning as fun and not just a means to an end. Knowledge is truly king in this world. The more you know the more valuable you are to your business and the business of others. Taking a course on website design or creating online videos will enhance your confidence and your business success.

All of this takes time. On average, it takes one to three years to turn a profit in business. Online, those numbers are lower because of the lack of significant overhead costs. Time can feel like the enemy unless you are determined to see your business through until you hit pay dirt.

Seeing your vision for a business clearly fuels your determination. You won’t be inclined to give up that vision even when the possibility of success is slim. Instead, you’ll search for resources that can help you get over the hurdles. You acknowledge setbacks but choose to view them in perspective and move on.

Creative Thinking

Boost Your Business with Creative Thinking

Ever heard the phrase, “When given lemons, make lemonade.”? This just goes to show even an unsuccessful venture in your business can be turned around to your advantage. A little thinking outside the box is all that’s in order to do it.

Every business owner develops a business plan. This plan is meant to be a blueprint for you. It is easy to get off track when pursuing a business goal so a plan gets (and keeps) you moving forward.

Plans in business and in life are subject to change. It will happen at least once – probably many more times than one, honestly. Part of your business plan includes strategies for marketing your product or service. Marketing is fluid when it comes to business. You start out with one technique and add others as you need them to improve sales. One example might be starting out with a press release followed by a direct mail campaign and so on.

What happens when sales begin to fall off using your current mix of marketing techniques? Even though there is an arsenal of marketing strategies available, it is not uncommon to get comfortable with a technique that works and not look into other ways to target customers. Why limit yourself? It is time to expand into new territory.

Trying different ways to reach current and potential customers can be daunting. It will require that you learn how to implement something new. Will you take the plunge or plod along hoping for sales to take an upturn using the same methods you’ve always used?

It’s All About ATTITUDE!

A positive mind-set toward struggling sales will get you further than simply hoping for a miracle with what you already have. All you need to do is implement a little creativity. For an online business, that could translate into creating a blog or forum. Find out what your customers are looking for in a business and determine the things yours might be lacking. Strive to give the customer what they want.

Every business has those customers who have been with them since the beginning. They hang in there because of quality, customer service and price (just to name a few). Think of creative ways to reward that loyalty. Things like:

• Money-saving coupons
• Free items when they refer their friends
• Faster online checkout
• Express service in the store

Maybe customers are looking for convenience. Offline businesses are creating an online presence to meet the growing demands of Internet users. Use your website to provide information about your products to the masses and also as a storefront.

Everyone is looking for ways to save money. Shopping online saves gas and time. If you don’t know much about creating a website, it is worth the time to learn in order to increase business sales. For online businesses, learn what other successful entrepreneurs are doing to increase their sales and improve customer relations.

What can you do to improve your business? It begins with a positive attitude. Then, find creative ways to continually build upon your success. This is not a process you can do once, set it and forget it. Business is about continually improving and growing. You’ll need to hold onto your optimistic outlook in order to keep rising above the competition.

Is Your Mind Still Getting In Your Way?

We’ve all heard the talk about positive thinking and how our own thoughts can create our reality.  And, it is hard to argue that positive thinking is in any way a bad thing.  But could your negative thoughts really be a bad thing?  Could your own mind be part of your stumbling block?

The reality is that positive thinking is an extremely powerful force. I am not talking about the law of attraction or the power of attraction. Rather, your personal power to navigate change and challenges effectively, and maintain your personal power. If you are or plan to be a business owner then you have to acknowledge that your success is dependent upon your ability to think and stay positive and embrace the challenges that come your way and learn the valuable lessons hey have to offer.  If you choose to be taken over by challenges and sink into negativity, questioning your vision and your abilities you will sink.

Keeping focused on your vision and staying open to the possibilities; are two of the keys to staying positive. Some businesses die from lack of creativity and willingness to change when necessary.  Keeping your positive outlook and evaluating the possibilities as they arise will keep your business on a positive swing. Open your mind to the possibilities that can keep your business successful and not add you to the heap of the dead and dying.

Stay Focused On Your Plan:

Look back at that original vision and plan.  Evaluate where you are right now and where you need to refocus.  Often business owners get distracted from the plan by the day to day business.  It is a perfect time to look back and see if you are still on track.  It is also an opportunity to decide if your plan needs to be revised or changed.  Staying open to the possibilities also leaves the door open to add new products or services to your offerings.  It is important to evaluate each of these in alignment with your overall business plan.  Do they fit well?

Keeping your mind out of your way is easier when you are focused on your plan and each decision you are making fits well into your business and marketing plan.

You may have decided on one course of action to get the business started. Now could be the perfect time to niche into a more defined product. Here are the advantages:

  • More targeted marketing strategies
  • Higher sales

Success has its own rewards, but only if you are willing to pursue it. When you allow yourself to dream big, the sky is the limit. You won’t grow without the attitude and vision to see beyond where you are now.

Do You Have a MSI Mindset?

Focusing on Your Own Personal Development: Take the Time

Do you ever wish you were someone else or somewhere else? Sometimes it happens that we get all wrapped up in our own doubts, fears and insecurities; that inner voice that nags at us and doesn’t say the nicest things. Do you ever feel that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence?  It might look like someone else is doing better, feeling better, more successful that you.  The reality is that many people, perhaps most people are having a similar experience and perhaps are more scared than you.

Focusing energy on your own personal development is a key to being truly satisfied with you.  Taking a dedicated amount of time each day and focusing that time on you can be the greatest gift you give to yourself.

The Internet offers a wealth of self development and self improvement opportunities.  There is a wealth of information available.  I use a system of self improvement that incorporates reading, audio and video programs on topics ranging from wealth and prosperity; to marketing; to self esteem, motivation and mindset. Learning and self development is part of a self development plan.  The next part is incorporating that learning into life.  With any educational program you have to sort through what is meaningful and what is not, for you.

The first step to self improvement is self love. It is perhaps the hardest love to achieve.  Whitney Houston has a song “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.” It’s so true. Loving yourself gives you the ability to really love others.  It is hard to give what you do not have, yet people believe that they can love others without truly loving themselves.

Modeling self love and personal development are more powerful than telling people “they ought to”.  Their observation of your practices of personal development can model for them how to achieve similar success.  Self improvement makes us better people, we can then inspire other people, and then the rest of the world will follow.

What areas of your life would you like to improve upon? Are there areas of personal development that you would benefit from?

Take a moment and create your personal development plan.  A plan you say?  Yes, a plan.  A personal development plan increases your commitment.  But you are also working to change patterns of behavior and habits.  This does not come easily.  A dedicated plan can assist you in doing this.  Start with 15 minutes a day of focused personal development time.  Choose your daily topic and take the time to read, listen, watch, participate in a personal development activity.  Then take 15 minutes to integrate what you have learned.  The effect of focused personal development only impacts your life when you integrate your new learning into your daily practices.  It is just a learning event or training event and then it is over.  Where to start?  Start with self love.

One of the programs that I am participating in for my personal development is Success University.  What is incredible about this program is the volume of resources that it offers AND the additional revenue that it provides to my family income.  Right now they are offering an incredible program as they are adding World Ventures in just a few days.  Check out the site, the 14 day free trial and see what you can do to benefit your personal development and your income at the same time.

If you have questions — give me a call and I will gladly share with you what I have found extraordinary about this program.
