When I got started, I did not know much about running a business, marketing a business or building a thriving business. I had to learn it all, and I did!
What I determined is that there are some key areas that you MUST be competent in and excel at to really build a thriving business. Before you keep reading download my checklist so that you can complete it as you read.
Leadership is first.
Effective leaders have a clear vision of what they are building. They know where they are going and why. They are passionate about that vision and that passion radiates from them, making them attractive to their potential customers. They share themselves in their brand and their brand is clear and compelling. They clearly share their brand messaging — and it stands out.
They have a CEO mindset that guides their actions and keeps them on track. Being the CEO or leader of the business makes them the business developer. They are responsible for business growth, not necessarily, does that mean that they have to do it, but they do lead it.
Their leadership and mindset guide the organization and set the tone for staff, clients and customers as well as new business leads. Leadership is critical.
Many business owners have not figured out HOW to put the CEO hat on yet! They are good at what they do, but not at the business side of things. It is different from being an employee — it is a whole new mindset to get used to.
Marketing is second…and it is key!
I used to hate marketing. As a non profit leader, I hadn’t really had to do marketing. But what I have found is that when you do it well and understand the marketing principles that are working in our current business environment, then it can become really fun, because it is what drives the profitability of your business.
With effective, strategic marketing — you have that clear and compelling message and you have developed systems that work to build your list of new business leads, convert those leads into paying customers or clients and create loyalty with each customer so that they are coming back to you over and over again for your products or services. This is accomplished with an effective lead generation strategy, landing page strategy, drip campaign and conversion techniques. All of these take know how for your advertising, social media messages and content marketing. The goal of marketing is relationship building throughout the entire process, from beginning to end. In every piece that you use, you are building relationships with your prospects, leads, and customers. The relationship matters and connects back to your leadership and core values.
At this point, you are probably feeling overwhelmed with all of the pieces and all that needs to be done. That is why the next step is systems.
Putting all of this together into effective systems is key. Systems can help to make your profitability more predictable because you know what is working and what is not working. You have established the process and the systems to automate the parts that can be automated. Many, many business leaders are winging it. They do NOT have a predictable system in place to build their business as they want it. When you develop marketing systems and operational systems and then use them, your business runs more smoothly –>> like a well oiled machine, and your life becomes easier.
When you create systems you position your business for growth. Automated systems, policies and procedures, each give you an edge that allows you to hire more staff or your first staff, hand tasks over to staff or an outsource company. Systems that work, add value. Documenting those systems makes it so you are ready to scale UP.
My guess is that your vision involves having some sort of impact on your customers. You solve a problem that they have that they do not want, with your product or service. If you don’t, then what does your business actually offer. We are all problem solvers. We have the solutions to other people’s pain, whether it is actual pain like back pain, or business success pain or a flat tire, we each have our niche that we work in and help other people in.
Your impact can be bigger than you imagine right now, with new services or products. Looking at how to radiate your impact out, expands your business in a variety of ways. When this truly starts to happen, that in itself can help your business grow and scale.
Results: It all comes down to producing real world results!
In my business, in your business, none of this matters if we don’t actually produce results. Looking at results can be painful and can be the most important thing that you do. When you create an effective plan and actually track those results, you will see that they shift and improve.
